GOOD BOOKS ABOUT ALPINE PLANTS

We highly recommend a couple of books that you might have to order second-hand:

  • Alpine Plant Life: Functional Plant Ecology of High Mountain Ecosystems, by Christian Körner. Springer-Verlag, 1999. Paperback version:  ISBN 3 540 65438 0. How do plants survive in the alpine? This books tells us in rich detail, offering many insights into the patterns of plant life and many clues for growing alpines in the lowlands.

  • After the Ice Age: The Return of Life to Glaciated North America, by E.C. (Chris) Pielou. University of Chicago Press, 1991. Paperback edition:  ISBN 0 226 66812 6. Many of the alpine plants we cherish survived the last Ice Age. This book tells us how they and other plants and animals fared as the climate of North America repeatedly warmed and cooled during the last 20,000 years.
