WHERE OUR PLANTS COME FROM
Here are some pictures of our nursery.
Camassia, Iris, Rosa beds.jpg (38086 bytes)    Erythronium, fritillary beds.jpg (43339 bytes)    Cold frames late Feb. 2001 Pat.jpg (33391 bytes)    Arisaema_yunnanense_IMGP6035x.jpg (97825 bytes)

Most of our herbaceous plants are native to western North America. Some are native to the Himalaya, China, Japan, Chile, Argentina and New Zealand ~ regions that have temperate conditions compatible with ours.

We grow about 75% of the plants we sell. The rest are grown by friends and allies. At first we tried to grow everything. Now we try to grow what others don't.

The range of our rare and unusual bulbs has gradually extended beyond the Pacific Rim to include western China, Central Asia, the Balkans, eastern North America. We continue to emphasize species and we do our utmost to ensure that these glorious fellow creatures are not ripped from the wild.  Supplies are always limited.

We used to guarantee that no plant is ripped from the wild, but the more we learn about our business, the clearer it is that chicanery and bad faith abound. We do our best to stay on the side of conservation and eschew many "opportunities" to acquire desirable plants that we see other nurseries embracing. We are not holier than they are; we just see the world differently.

If you need plants for a particular site, eco-region or habitat, please ask. We keep track of where all our plants and seeds come from. Every collection or accession has a number. We also know specialist growers around the world, so if you want something you just can't find, it's possible we can help you.

HARDINESS

When we say hardy, we mean hardy in the garden in wet USDA Zone 6, where we live.

ZONES

Climate zones are inexact. You can grow many plants from outside your official zone. Experiment! End of lecture. Here are some maps.

Agriculture Canada zones (revised in 2000; different from USDA and "Sunset" zones).

"Sunset" climate zones for the United States.

US National Arbor Day Foundation zones, revised "warmer" in 2006.

US Dept. of Agriculture (USDA) zones. These are not the most subtle, but they make comparison easy.
