How on earth did we wind up growing so many different violets? We have no idea. But we do think violets are very special plants.  

Plant lovers in Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand please note: We can ship violets to you only when they are dormant, in late autumn. This is because your laws insist that all plants imported be completely bare-root.

Viola grypoceras  A. Gray. タチツボスミレ  Tachitsubosumire  (Japanese, "Character pot violet"). Native to China, Japan and the Korean Peninsula. Flowers are usually blue but may be white or purple.

Viola langsdorfii (Regel) Fisch. ex Ging.

Viola mandshurica W. Becker. Blue flowers. スミレ Sumire (Japanese).

Viola mandshurica W. Becker. White flowers. スミレ Sumire (Japanese).

Viola rostrata Pursh. Long-spurred violet. Native to E North America. Violet-blue. 

Viola selkirkii Pursh ex Goldie. Selkirk's violet, Great-spurred violet. ミヤマスミレ  Miyamasumire (Japanese). Circumboreal. Our plants are from Japanese stock. The flowers are violet-blue, with no beard and a fat, swollen spur. The leaves are heart-shaped.

Viola sempervirens Greene. 

Viola senamiensis Nakai. Sometimes called Viola grayi. Our seeds were received from Japan and we are unable to pronounce on the taxonomy.

Viola verecunda  A. Gray. ツボスミレ (Japanese, "Pot violet"). This is an exceptionally small  Japanese woodland violet (verecunda means  "modest"). It is very popular as a house plant. The flowers are pale mauve with maroon or purple guidelines, the leaves densely packed and waxy. Native across much of E Asia.
