Lupinus arcticus syn.
latifolius
This legume prefers to live below the alpine, but it is very hardy. Seeds cached in lemming burrows, frozen for 10,000 years under Yukon glaciers, have been germinating as melting ice frees them. The lupines in our photograph are on Mount Perkins in British Columbia's Chilcotin region. |
