Fireweeds grow in
disturbed areas everywhere on Earth save the tropics and deserts, we are
told; but don't be surprised to see them there, too. Epilobium
angustifolium, the commonest fireweed, was named for the way it leaps
into growth after a forest fire. Epilobium is related to Clarkia
and Oenothera (Evening
primrose). Its nectar is a favorite of hummingbirds; bees turn it into
superb honey.
