Uvularia grandiflora Smith.
Large-flowered bellwort. Merrybells. This spectacular,
clump-forming lily cousin rises on straight stalks to produce crowds of
dangling, lemon-yellow flowers in April-May. The stalks and the flower
stems pierce the glaucous leaves. The flower's 6 segments twist like
streamers. Beautiful! Native to damp, deciduous woods in
much of east-central North America. Here you see it in Quebec (above) and
in Wisconsin (left). Though in the wild it favors neutral to calcium-rich
sites, in gardens it grows well in almost any soil that is moist, rich and
organic. Dappled shade. Height to 75 cm
(30"). Zone 4. Rhizome (bare-root).
