Trientalis
latifolia Hooker. Western starflower. This small,
ephemeral groundcover for dappled shade emerges in March-April here and
blooms in May-June. It is delightful but be warned: it requires mature,
lively forest soil. Planted in immature soil ~ the kind typically found on
new lots ~ it will not return. This treasure is native on our land. There
was a patch in our garden where the native soil had been scraped away by a
bulldozer. We "created" soil to replace it, piling up composted
bark, manure and leaves for years. Native Trillium, Lilium, Erythronium
and Asarum consented to live there quite soon, but Trientalis
began to multiply only around the 25-year mark. Height to 10 cm (4").
The shiny pink tubers are naturally tiny.
Tuber (fall shipping only). $3.00
