Toad lilies are cherished for
their beautifully freckled flowers in the autumn shade garden. Their
rhizomes will form clumps, then colonies, given moist humus. Their
somewhat lax stems have alternate, often clasping leaves; their bell-like
flowers bloom at the tip of the stem and sometimes in the upper leaf
axils. Tricyrtis are native to woodlands in a broad swathe
from the E Himalaya to Japan. Plant them where low shrubs and
perennials can support their stems, or on a slope, where the stems can
arch gracefully downward.
