STERNBERGIA  AUTUMN DAFFODIL Amaryllidaceae (Amaryllis family) / Alliaceae (Allium family)

Return to Plants Index    Bulbs Index

These are rare plants, protected in the wild nowadays. Our bulbs are from seeds of cultivated stock, not wild-collected. We can ship them  internationally, but they require a CITES certificate.

If you like Sternbergia, take a look also at Colchicum and Crocus.

Sternbergia greuteriana Kamari & R.Artelari. This diminutive species was first described in 1990. It sends up bright yellow, Crocus-like flowers in autumn, often ahead of its narrow leaves. S. greuteriana is native to Crete and the nearby island of Karpathos. Our bulbs descend from material collected on Karpathos in 1987 by Manfred Koenen (MK.0187). This is said to be the only Sternbergia that makes stolons. Height of flowers 5 cm (2"). Zone 6.

Bulb (Fall shipping only). $12.50

Sternbergia lutea subsp. sicula  (Tineo ex Guss.) D.A. Webb. Also known as Sternbergia sicula. This autumn-flowering species is the most widespread Sternbergia. Our plants of the subspecies descend from material collected by Antoine Hoog (AH0151) in Greece, on Mt. Menalo in the Peloponnesus in 2001. The flowers are hard to distinguish from 'Arcadian Sun' but they bloom later ~ in September-October ~ and continue for weeks after 'Arcadian Sun' is over. Height of flowers 5-10 cm (2-4").  Protect with horticultural fleece or conifer branches during hard frosts after emergence. Zone 7.

Bulb (Fall shipping only). $9.00

Sternbergia lutea subsp. sicula (Tineo ex Guss.) D.A. Webb 'Arcadian Sun' . Also called S. sicula 'Arcadian Sun'.  This famous, floriferous clone sends up many large, buttercup-yellow flowers in September above narrow, deep green leaves.  Very similar in appearance to the previous item, it was selected from material collected in the Peloponnesus by Herbert and Molly Crook (C.529) in 1966. Height of flowers 5-10 cm (2-4").  Protect with horticultural fleece or conifer branches during hard frosts after emergence. Zone 7.

Bulb (Fall shipping only). $6.00
