Nomocharis
are small subalpine bulbs of the Himalaya with wide flowers on short
stems. They were shuffled back and forth between Lilium
and Fritillaria. for
ages, then finally awarded their own genus. They like a cool, well
aerated, humusy root run and light shade. |

delightful bulb in our garden. The flowers are sometimes a little deeper

maroon anthers. This is said to be the easiest Nomocharis to grow. It does well in
Edinburgh and in Vancouver, BC. Height 20-25
cm (8-10"). Zone 6, perhaps colder.

Nomocharis
aperta #2.
We bought these unseen as Lilium oxypetalum var. insigne,
a taxon introduced by George Forrest from Simla, India, but now lumped
into N. aperta. In his authoritative Lilies, A Guide for Growers
and Collectors, our friend Eddie McRae describes L. oxypetalum Baker
var. insigne Sealy as a vigorous grower with "purplish pink
and green" flowers. Height 20-25 cm (8-10"). Zone 6, perhaps
colder.
