Dichelostemma ida-maia (A.W. Wood) E. Greene. Firecracker
flower. Attention-grabbing clusters of tubular flowers ~ hot pink to
red with apple-green
cuffs ~ bloom in June on wiry, leafless stems. Needs excellent drainage,
part-day shade and a dry summer. Native to S Oregon and N California,
where it is reputed to be one of the few bulbs pollinated by hummingbirds.
Certainly hummingbirds are drawn to it. Our bulbs descend from seed wild-collected in
California. Height to 100 cm
(40"). Often called Zone 8; we grow it sheltered from winter rain in
Zone 6.
Bulb $2.00
